How to Care for Your New Suit

When you buy a suit, and especially if you choose to have a bespoke suit created just for you, it is an investment in yourself and it deserves the same level of care as any other investment you make. A good suit isn’t - and shouldn’t be - cheap, and like anything worthwhile, it needs attention.

Your suit, be it for your job, an event or your wedding, should be cared for properly to ensure it stands the test of time, and we’re going to share some tips that you *might* not have thought of when it comes to caring for your suit.

1. Let it Breathe

Taking your suit jacket off and allowing it time to be on a hanger can help it keep its shape by allowing the fibres to relax. Not only this, but having a few suit jackets in your wardrobe will allow your suit to air out and help keep the time between cleaning longer.

2. Store it with Care

What you choose to hang your suit on is just as important as when you choose to hang it, so make sure that you invest in a sturdy, high quality round-shouldered hanger. We personally prefer wood, as this lasts the longest and helps to hold the shape of your jacket and allows it enough room to air out.

Whatever you do, make sure that your jacket is always hung. Resist the urge to place it on the back of a chair, or worse - adding it to the pile of clothes that can sometimes gather in the corner of a room. Trust us - it’s not a great look.

3. Put off Dry Cleaning

When we say this, we’re definitely not suggesting that you NEVER dry clean your suit - you will definitely need to. What we are saying, though, is that dry cleaning can be hard on suits, and should be done sparingly. Each time you choose to dry clean a suit, it’s lifespan shortens which is not ideal - especially when you’ve made quite an investment in it.

Instead, opt to dry clean your suit on when you really need to. For example, if it begins to smell or if there’s a stain that can’t be removed with a little water.

4. Get Yourself a Steamer

Following on from the above, cleaning and caring for your suit doesn’t only mean washing it. You should- if possible - not iron your suit. Irons can often get too hot and tend to damage the fine fibres. On the other hand, a steamer can open up the fibres and prevent and smells settling in, and can also help to remove stains and small imperfections.

5. Lighten the Load

… and as such you don’t need to carry every item you own in your pockets. We know it’s not always ideal to carry around a handbag, backpack or purse, and it can be tempting to load up whatever pockets you have - but don’t.

This not only throws off the carefully structured silhouette of your suit, but over time it can alter the shape and stretch out the pockets and the lining. If your suit if quite slim and fitted, opt to carry on the essentials. Think cards, cash, ID, phone and keys.

6. Pick up a Lint Roller

Clothing can often pick up small debris, lint and pet hair, so make sure you have a lint roller handy as it’s not only the quickest and easiest way to keep your suit looking clean and sharp, but it can also extend the life of the natural fibres.
