Nailing the Perfect Proposal

If you’re lucky, the person you'll spend the rest of your life with is right by your side. Whether you met in high school, or whether you’re recently dating, when you know - you know. For a lot of people, the next step is to make things official with a ring, which can be pretty exciting, but also understandably daunting. We’ll walk you through a few of the most important things to consider before proposing to help everything go smoothly and be a moment to remember.

1. Location, location, location

  • One of the things you’ll both remember is the location the proposal took place, and aside from creating a memory, the location helps to set the tone. If your partner is on the shy side and isn’t a fan of having all eyes on her, keep it intimate. However, if you know that they regularly binge-watch extravagant proposals on YouTube, they’re likely to love a grand gesture  - so go all out!

  • Once you’ve secured your location, make sure to visit one to two times before your proposal - at a similar time of day - to assess factors such as traffic noise, crowds, and lighting.

  • If you’re hiring a photographer to capture the moment, make sure that there’s plenty of space for them to be there without intruding on the moment.

2. Make a list

  • If you’re someone who finds remembering little details tricky, jot down a quick ‘wish list’ of what you’d like to achieve - whether it’s remembering to bring tissues or hire a photographer. Your list doesn’t need to be extravagant but should serve to take away some of the overwhelm from the day.

3. Hire a Photographer

  • If a photographer was on your list, then it’s one we fully support.

  • Your engagement is a day that you always want to be able to remember clearly, and a memory that’s best shared, which is hard if there aren’t any pictures to immortalise the moment.

  • Expert photographers are incredibly talented and will always know how to capture the light, make your setting look even more magical, and get that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

4. Hide the Ring

  • A big part of what makes a proposal so special is the surprise of it all, so make sure you don’t give yourself away by leaving the ring anywhere too obvious.

  • If you can’t think of anywhere secure in your house, ask a close friend or family member to hold the ring until the big day comes.

5. Choose the Date Carefully

  • The idea of proposing on her birthday, or Christmas Day, might seem like a great idea in theory, but we recommend keeping the day of the engagement special by not using any already-special days.

  • Instead, choose a day sentimental to you both, such as the day of your first date, the first time you said ‘I love you’, or the day you became official.

6. Enjoy Every Moment

  • Most importantly, don’t lose sight of the big picture.

  • It’s easy to let the stress of planning one of the biggest days of your life (no pressure!) get to you, but take a moment to remember that this is your day too.
