Men’s and women’s suits are cut differently, sized differently and often finished differently. This guide covers the key differences, the main types of women’s suit, and what to check when choosing one.

Key Differences Between Men’s and Women’s Suits

Shoulders. Men’s jackets are usually wider and more built up at the shoulder. Women’s jackets are usually narrower and follow the natural shoulder more closely.

Chest and bust. Women’s jackets are shaped through the bust, usually with darts or princess seams. Men’s jackets have a flatter front.

Waist and hips. Women’s jackets are usually shaped in at the waist and allow more room at the hip. Men’s jackets are cut straighter.

Jacket length. Lengths vary by style, but women’s jackets are often shorter than men’s.

Trousers. Women’s trousers allow more room at the hip and seat compared with the waist. The rise is also cut differently.

Button side. By convention, men’s jackets button right over left and women’s jackets button left over right.

Sizing. Off-the-rack men’s jackets are usually sized by chest measurement, while women’s suits use dress sizes. The two systems do not convert directly.

Can Women Wear Men’s Suits?

Yes. Many women prefer the straighter lines and structured shoulders of a men’s style suit. The issue with buying from the men’s section is fit: off-the-rack men’s jackets are often too wide at the shoulders and tight at the hips, and the sleeves and trouser legs are usually too long.

Types of Women’s Suit

Two-piece suit. A jacket with matching trousers. The most versatile option, because the jacket and trousers can also be worn separately.

Three-piece suit. A two-piece with a matching waistcoat. More formal, and the waistcoat keeps the outfit complete if you take the jacket off.

Skirt suit. A jacket with a matching skirt. Often worn in more traditional workplaces or formal settings.

How to Choose a Women’s Suit

Choose a cloth you can wear often. Wool is the most practical choice for a suit you will wear regularly, because it holds its shape and does not crease easily.

Check the fit points. The shoulder seam should end at your shoulder. The jacket should close without pulling across the bust. Any waist shaping should sit at your natural waist. Sleeves should end around the wrist bone.

Decide on the style you want. You can choose a traditionally feminine cut, a men’s style cut, or details from both.
