3 Style Tips for the Mother of the Bride

When you think of the struggles of dressing for a wedding, your mind might immediately go to the bride, and her search for the perfect dress or suit, but how often do you stop to think about the Mother of the Bride?

Where once the Mother of the Bride was pigeonholed into wearing something subdued and beige, times have (thankfully) moved on. These days, there are so many choices for the big day ranging from dresses to suits, which can be incredibly overwhelming.

Never fear - we’re here with our top tips that every MoB needs to know when it comes to finding the perfect outfit.

1. Let the Bride/s Guide You

If there’s one sure place to start when choosing your outfit for the day, it’s by consulting the bride/s. The bride/s will be the one to set the tone for the event, and will, most likely, know exactly what they’d like you to wear to fit within the wedding theme.

Whether you’re stuck on colour, fabric, fit or feel, we’d always recommend checking in with the bride/s first.

2. Take Wedding Colour Cues

One of the most common ways of narrowing down your outfit for the day is usually referring back to what the bridesmaids are wearing. Here, you’ll likely choose a colour in line with theirs to ensure the entire bridal party matches.

However, more and more often brides are choosing to have smaller ceremonies, which can mean there are no bridal parties. When this is the case, take your cues from the colour scheme on the day. If the couple have opted for neutrals, choose something light and airy. Conversely, if the theme is black tie, seek out something in silver or grey.

You’ll have a lot to work with when referencing colour, but one of the most important rules for the big day is to avid colour matching with the bride/s.

3. Think About the Venue

Where the wedding - and reception - is being held is a very useful indicator for what you should wear. For example, you might not opt for a strappy dress at a church wedding, and likewise, you would stay away from formal cocktail attire at a beach wedding.

Of course, pairing a strappy dress with a fitted blazer would elevate your outfit to something a little more church-appropriate.

Bonus Tip: Give Yourself Enough Time

Finding the perfect outfit can be something that takes weeks or even months. There’s no one-stop-shop for what you have in mind, and a lot of the time, Mothers of the Bride will have something custom-made for the day.

A made-to-measure outfit will take a few weeks to design and create, so it’s important to allow yourself the time needed to have something created just for you.
