3 Tips for Communicating as a Leader this IWD

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”

In order to achieve an equal future, and to get more women in positions of leadership, there are certain skills that need to be instilled and learned. One of the most important is communication. We’d like to preface this blog by acknowledging that in no way is this a simple solution to a very global problem.

Instead, we’re aiming to address something smaller that, no matter what level you’re at in your career, can be applied today.

Whether you lead a team or are looking to step into a leadership role, there are 3 very important things to communicate as a leader to help lead a team towards success. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but rather a good place to start.

1. Communicate with Passion

Effective leadership isn’t telling people what to do, it’s showing them, and leading them to discover their Why behind their job. Passion is a powerful tool for inspiring others, and when you communicate with the passion you have for your role, the company, and the wider team, it’s easy to inspire others to act the same.
If you can encourage your team to invest in the company values, you’ll have an inspired, motivated, and willing team around you.

2. Communicate with Passion

The level of detail in which you choose to communicate can have a big impact on the outcome of a task for your team. If you communicate in too much detail, people could be left feeling confused and overwhelmed. Instead, focus on distilling your communication to the basics, the what, why, how, and when of a task.
Make sure that each member of your team has a solid knowledge of how to do every aspect of their job that is controllable.

3. Communicate the Intangibles

As a leader, it's your job to communicate the things that can’t be touched. The values, feelings, and aspirations of your company or business. More importantly, it’s your job to pull out of people their specific skills and talents that help them be the best they can be at their job.
Focus on their drivers, rather than putting a lot of focus on their output, and this is where you’ll see people really come into their own.

Once again, this is by no means an exhaustive list. However, if you are a new leader or looking to make your way into a leadership role, this is a great place to start.
